Quick Fix: Disqus Comment System Shows No Comment Count

Disqus is a great alternative to the built-in WordPress commenting system. On the page you display your posts you may run into the problem of the comment counts not displaying properly.

The Problem: JavaScript Complications

Sometimes when you load a number of JavaScript files in the header of your page it will cause conflicts. This may cause some of your scripts to not work, such as Disqus.

The Fix: Move JavaScripts to Footer

Don’t worry, this is a no code approach. Go to your Disqus options panel under the Comments section in your WordPress backend:

Disqus Options

Next, click on “Advanced Options”:

Disqus Advanced Options

Comment Counts: “Load JavaScript in Footer”

A few options down you should see the Comment Counts option. Checking this option will output JavaScript in the Footer.

Disqus Output Options

Check this if you have problems with the comment count displays, permalinks issues, broken featured image carousels, or longer-than-usual homepage load times.

Bam, no more “View Comments” and now the actual comment counts display.

Why Disqus?

Using the Disqus WordPress plugin is easy to install and requires no code. It’s a great plugin for any website and is the best in it’s class for online social commenting.

    Maybe this is a separate issue, but I can’t get my comment count to work correctly. I have a feeling I’m missing something with the syntax declaration. I am using this code within my loop to display comment count below the excerpt on my index page:

    < ?php comments_number('No Comments', '1 comment', '% comments');

    What am I missing to get the disqus comment count for each thread to be displayed? Thanks in advance for your time on this matter!

    Hello Andrew, I have this problem too in my site. However it’s fixed at least at homepage when using this code :

    Open your FTP and find disqus.php. Change the following:

    return ‘View Comments’;

    to:

    return ”.$post->comment_count.”;

    Still this solution not solved for me, still can’t see comment counts at sitemap. Maybe above codes will help you.

    Cheer.

    I installed Disqus and just used your above tip to display the number of comments correctly on my blog ( http://www.kitchencabinetkings.com/blog/ )but the actual comments are no where to be found. If I view the source, I can see some of the previous comments but they don’t display on the front-end. Is this normal? Check this post ( http://www.kitchencabinetkings.com/blog/modernize-your-bathroom/ ) as an example of a post that has comments but aren’t showing up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Yes, Disqus is great. TUAW’s recent change of commenting systems, in my opinion, is a disaster. Every option (using their AOL-based system) wanted permission to mine my personal information, like my tweets, and even post on my facebook wall.
