How to Filter Your Facebook News Feed
Drowning in a sea of status updates? You’re not alone. If you have a lot of friends or “liked” a lot of pages then you’ll definitely want to know how to better organize your Facebook News Feed using Facebook filters.
Facebook’s Two Basic Filters: Top News and Most Recent
The two labels to the top right of your Facebook news feed display content from people and pages you’ve liked by default. “Top news” shows items with the most buzz while the “Most Recent” filters by time posted.
Let’s Dig Deeper: Additional Built-in News Feed Filters
Only interested in photos or status updates? You can easily filter through Facebook’s minutia and get down to the content you want with Facebook’s additional built-in news feed filters:
- Status Updates
- Games
- Photos
- Links
- Pages
Note: The number of filters displayed may be more or less depending on the Facebook account.
Edit Your News Feed Settings
Below Facebook’s standard news feed filters you will see the option to create a new friends list to filter your news feed with. This is the key to unlocking a customized news feed. It’s really easy to use; to begin, click Create a Friend List:
![]()
Next, provide the new list with a name (Mine will be “College Buds”) and begin selecting friends to add to your new list either by clicking on their profile picture or typing their name in the input:

Once you are done click Create List. Now, when I click on my filter list I can now see that I have the option to filter my news feed with this newly created friends list:
All I have to do is select the list and now my news feed is filtered according to the list’s members.

Bonus: Facebook will even suggest friends from your profile for your to add to the list. This is located in the right sidebar below the “On This List” widget:

Add Additional Lists
You may have noticed that once you create one list in the filter section the option to create more lists is no longer there. To create additional news feed list filters go to Account > Edit Friends and you will see the Create a List button in the top right corner of the content area.
